Indoor inspection of the roof is also equally important. Check for any sagging decking between rafters. If deteriorated, decking will have to be replaced at the time of installation of new roof. You should check if there is any outside light coming from the roof. Although this is common for shake roof. During the rainy season wooden shakes tend to swell and prevent leakage. Inspect for dark spots in the wood near vent and chimneys in your house. This may indicate the leaking in these areas.

Dark spots in the wood give hints about leakage problem. If the problem is current, these spots will be wet and soft. You may use a screwdriver bit to check the softness. On the other hand if the problem is old and has been fixed, these spots will be hard and dry.

You will find signs of damage caused by leaking water like stains or sagging ceilings. These are due to poor roof ventilation. Poor roof ventilation causes condensation.
